Meet the Growers

Charlie and Lina Motta (see pictured) have been living in the Koo Wee Rup area for about 40 years, growing vegetables including potatoes, onions and carrots. “We started growing asparagus in the late sixties and early seventies, starting with 50 acres. We gradually grew more asparagus until 1978 when we began specialising in asparagus. Now we have 400 acres planted with asparagus and that’s all we grow,” says Charlie.

Charlie and Lina’s sons - Michael and Alex - loved growing up on the farm, just as their children do. “The lifestyle here in the country is great - with the open spaces and the people. The kids love it, with the chooks, sheep, rabbits, dogs and even peacocks,” says Michael. Both boys have been involved in the family farm, having grown up on the farm surrounded by asparagus.

Asparagus is one of Michael’s favourite vegetables. “Our kids love it. A lot of people who have had it for the first time, love it. I’ve seen that at cooking demonstrations at shopping centres. People may have only tasted asparagus out of a can and they are surprised at the difference in flavour,” explains Michael. And it’s lucky that Michael is passionate about the industry because he is the one who has to get up at night and drive his very distinctive truck off to the market for a 2.00am start!

Charlie regards asparagus as a very good crop to grow, and he and Lina enjoy fresh asparagus in season. “Our best way of cooking asparagus is an omelette - with eggs, onion and a bit of bacon. That’s one of our favourites. Risotto is second best and also cooked on the barbecue. There are so many ways you can cook it!” he says.

The Motta family grows both white and green asparagus for the domestic market as well as for the export market. To contact the Motta family, call (03) 5997-1343, mobile 0418-506-531 or email motta@nex.net.au
