Norm Kerton

Norm Kerton is a third generation farmer from Bairnsdale in the East Gippsland area of Victoria. In the 1950’s, Norm’s family grew maize and ran a dairy farm. In the late 1960’s they moved over to farming sheep and cattle, then in the early seventies, they started growing vegetables including beans, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, baby leaf lettuce, spinach and asparagus.

Norm now grows 300 acres of vegetables including 120 acres of green asparagus. Here, the fertile soils - which lie on the silty river flats of the Bairnsdale/Lindenow area - are different from the rich black/brown peaty soils of the Koo Wee Rup/Dalmore area. However, asparagus thrives on both soil types, which are rich in minerals and organic matter.

Norm and his wife, Marlene, not only appreciate the country living, they love the great climate of the Bairnsdale area. A bonus is the close proximity of the beautiful Gippsland Lakes, which are only 45 minutes away, and the snowfields, which are only 1 1/2 hours away.

Norm and Marlene’s son, Trevor, works with Norm on the farm and daughter, Sandra, works in the packing shed. Trevor and Sandra grew up surrounded by vegetables and have a natural liking for them - especially asparagus.

“Our favourite way of cooking asparagus is in the microwave. Simply wash and drain it, then put it into a microwave dish with about 1 cm water, cover with Gladwrap and cook it for a few minutes until tender. Serve it with butter and pepper and a glass of beer or wine,” says Norm.
