Australian Asparagus Council The Australian Asparagus Council is a group of 64 asparagus growers in the Koo Wee Rup, Dalmore and Bairnsdale areas of Victoria. The small town of Koo Wee Rup is located 65 km south east of Melbourne and is the major asparagus production area in Australia, producing over 70% of Australia’s asparagus. This area is largely responsible for the development of strong export relationships with Japan and Taiwan. Australia is now the biggest world trader in green asparagus to Asia - exporting more than 67% of its total production to Japan during the southern hemisphere spring, compared to the USA which exports less than 5% of its total production during its season. The Australian Asparagus Council first came about in the mid 1980’s when it was called the Australian Asparagus Export Council - organised by exporters trying to unite and coordinate the Australian Asparagus Industry, particularly in relation to shipping and marketing. In 1988, the Australian Asparagus Council was formed and collected voluntary levies - with 100% of growers contributing - allowing an initial marketing and promotions campaign to be undertaken.
