July 2003 - Media Release

Australian Asparagus - Spring 2003 Preview

Thank you for the wonderful support for the 2002 Asparagus Season. Feedback from last year’s campaign indicated that pre season communications assisted you in planning your spring and summer asparagus features. So now the growers of the Australian Asparagus Council (a group of 74 growers of the Koo Wee Rup, Dalmore, Bairnsdale areas of Victoria and other areas) want you to know.

We have simplified our website address

Our comprehensive website has a new, simpler domain address www.asparagus.com.au (our original address www.australianasparagus.com.au will continue to operate simultaneously for two years). Check out the website - it is packed with interesting facts about how asparagus is grown, who is growing it, how some of our top chefs love to cook it, and a host of taste tempting recipes.

Did you know that asparagus can grow up to 1cm per hour?

One day after picking the shoots of this amazing plant, you would wonder if you had been dreaming - for the next day, you can be faced with fully grown spears that will need to be harvested before they become too long and spindly for our liking.

Do you know how white asparagus is grown?

White asparagus spears used to be harvested before they emerged from the soil into the sunlight - this required highly skilled cutters and necessitated building the soil up into mounds. These days, you will see long rows of black semicircular polyhouses - purpose built to block out the sunlight and prevent photosynthesis and the production of chlorophyll which gives plants their characteristic green colour.

About our new Recipe Club

On September 1, 2003 we will launch our Recipe Club on the website. Visitors to the website will be able to contribute their favourite fresh asparagus recipes to be featured in the Recipes & Tips section. Each month a lucky winner will be chosen from the contributors, with great prizes on offer.
