This Smash Enterprises* Cool Sac of new season’s fresh asparagus has been sent to you by the Australian Asparagus Council – growers from the Koo Wee Rup, Dalmore and Bairnsdale areas of Southern Victoria who produce over 70% of Australia’s fresh asparagus. We hope you have fun cooking up a storm of delicious dishes from stir-fries to salsas! Please also encourage home cooks to enter our Recipe Club Competition on out website www.asparagus.com.au. All they have to do is send us their favourite asparagus recipe to be in the running to win a jumbo sized George Foreman Grill.

Asparagus is rich in nutrients including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, dietary fibre, folate and potassium. Throughout the ages, asparagus has been prized for its medicinal properties - it is a natural diuretic and laxative with a beneficial effect on the kidneys, liver and bowel.

Smash Hit – Quick & Easy

Just rinse under cold water and snap off the woody ends - and asparagus is ready to go! Leave as whole elegant spears or use a sharp knife to quickly slice to the desired size and shape. Fresh asparagus is quick and easy - there is no need to peel except when using white asparagus, which does have a thicker skin.

Asparagus can be whipped up into tasty dishes to suit people of all ages – from juicy fresh for kids (they like to use tender crisp fresh spears as dippers) to blended soups for the elderly. Smash Hit - Celebrate Asparagus Festival

Our 2003 Celebrate Asparagus! Festival was a Smash Hit with locals and visitors to the region alike. This year’s Festival will be held Saturday October 9, from 8.00am to 1.00pm at Cardinia Ranges Farmers Market, Pakenham Racecourse, Racecourse Rd, Pakenham. Come along and:

• Meet local asparagus farmers and find out more about asparagus and how it’s grown.
• Watch local chefs present asparagus cooking demonstrations with free tastings and recipes.
• Purchase fresh asparagus to try the recipes at home!
• Meet ‘Gus’ the giant asparagus who will be there to delight the kids, with competitions and prizes on offer.
• Meet local food producers and shop for seasonal fruit and vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, free range pork and beef, barramundi, free range eggs, sour dough breads, olive oil and honey to name a few.
• Meet local wine makers, try local wine and find out the best matches for asparagus!
