Frank & Donna Bombaci
Frank’s parents, Ralf and Maria Bombaci brought the farm they now own in 1958. Frank and Donna had been working on the farm before finally purchasing it during the 2000 “asparie” season and their son Alex will be the third generation working the farm. As well as asparagus, Frank and Donna grow a variety of vegetables, which they sell at farm gate and local markets.
Donna says, “What we love about asparagus is that it is easy to cook and is healthy for you too. I love to pickle and bottle asparagus and it’s great on the BBQ but adding it to omelettes are the best, especially when you have been cutting or packing all day – it’s such a quick and easy meal.
The asparagus plant is delicate and tough at the same time. Luckily for us it recovers from the onslaught of hail and wind in a few days. It is also a handsome vegetable and has a relatively long lifespan.
I have a wonderful time selling our fresh vegetables at Inverloch and Churchill Island Markets and sometimes Croydon Markets, You get to meet so many lovely people and at Inverloch Market they all seem to have such wonderful dogs! People greet myself, my husband and my mum so happily – we can all get pretty excited over asparagus!”
Frank and Donna have put their farm in conversion with the Organic Growers Association and belong to Biological Farmers of Australia. In March 2010 their farm should be fully certified. Frank and Donna trade as F & D Bombaci and Deep Creek Organics (In Conversion No. 1298ic) at 1115 Manks Rd in Koo Wee Rup. Customers are welcome to drop in to the farm to buy seasonal fresh vegetables and will most likely be greeted by another member of the team - Frank and Donna’s wonderful, friendly old dog Max.
