Janelle Bloom
Janelle Bloom is one of this country’s most-loved food writers. She believes good cooking begins with confidence and a little patience. She cares very much that each of her recipes is foolproof, easy-to-follow and uses seasonal ingredients that are readily available. What’s more, each one has to taste every bit as good as it looks.
Janelle is one of the original chefs who inspire viewers every day on Australian television on the Ten Network / Southern Star production of “Ready Steady Cook” now in its fifth year on air. When asked to describe the show, Janelle says, ‘It’s challenging and chaotic, but the most fun I’ve had in a kitchen and the best job I have ever had!”
In November 2008, Random House Australia published Janelle’s gorgeous cookbook Fast, Fresh & Fabulous, the first book in 10 years for Janelle. It’s a beautiful collection of many of her special recipes that she hopes will encourage readers to try her no-fuss approach to delectable, homemade meals for family and friends. November 2009 will see Janelle launch another book Fab Food For Family & Friends.
Janelle was the food editor of Australia’s bestselling food magazine for more than four years and she continues to contribute to several publications as a writer and food stylist, and can be heard on a number of radio programs.
Janelle volunteers as much time as she can each week to her favourite cause, Ronald McDonald House in Randwick. She is the ambassador for the House and Dogtober, a new fundraising and awareness month for Assistance Dogs Australia. She says: “Working as a volunteer puts everything into perspective. It’s something we should all do.” When Janelle has some precious downtime she loves to read, swim, exercise (to work off all the food she eats) - and to cook, of course.
“When asked to contribute to promoting Australian Asparagus I jumped at the chance; it’s a vegetable I love to cook with and eat. It’s delicious steamed or cooked in the microwave for seconds and served as a side. However topped with a poached egg and crumbled feta on grain bread it makes great weekend meal. My top tip is - don’t over cook it as fresh asparagus should be bright green and crisp when served!”
